Event Details

The annual Friends of Sherborne Abbey Outing, this year to Wells Cathedral.  But you do not need to be a Friend to go on this trip – all are welcome!

Wells Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in Somerset dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle. It is the seat of the Bishop of Bath & Wells whose cathedral it holds as the mother church of the Diocese of Bath & Wells. Built as a Roman Catholic cathedral from around 1175 to replace an earlier church on the site since 705, it became an Anglican cathedral when King Henry VIII split from Rome. It is moderately sized for an English cathedral with its broad west front and large central tower dominant features.  It has been called “unquestionably one of the most beautiful” and “most poetic” of English cathedrals.

The coach will arrive in Wells late morning giving you some time to have a wander, do a bit of shopping and get some lunch. Our tour of Wells Cathedral is at 2.30 pm, a ‘Loft Cream Tea’ will be provided at 3.30 pm and we shall then attend Evensong at 5.15 pm. (The coach will leave Culverhayes car park, Sherborne at 10.00 am and leave Wells by 7.00 pm latest.)

All this for a mere £28.00 each! (Price includes coach travel, cathedral tour and afternoon tea.)  We look forward to you joining us.
