Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Exsultate, jubilate, K.165*; Requiem in D minor, K.626
Mendelssohn’s windswept paean to the Hebrides is an orchestral icon of early Romantic orchestral music. Haydn’s short but splendid Te Deum in C finds the Sherborne Festival Chorus in full voice and Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate – sung by the Chorus’s regular soloist Amelia Monaghan – promises to be both beautiful and uplifting. Mozart’s mighty final commission, the Requiem, brings our opening night to a dramatic close.

Formed in 1991, Florilegium is hailed as one of Britain’s most outstanding period instrument ensembles, with a host of critically acclaimed recordings and regular appearances in the world’s most prestigious concert venues. This highlight Festival concert opens with Bach’s First Orchestral Suite – an immensely popular genre in the late 18th century, playing on the dance forms of the day. Handel follows: the charming pastoral air ‘Sweet Bird’ and the alternately stately and lively Third concerto grosso of his op.3 set. Finally, Bach’s sublime secular cantata Ich bin in mir vergnugt professes that the greatest riches are to be found not outside of ourselves but within.

Ludwig Van Beethoven: Symphony no. 4 in B flat, op. 60
Our headline artist this year is Dorset-born cellist Natalie Clein. Described by The Times as ‘mesmerising’ and ‘soaringly passionate’, she enjoys a distinguished international career performing with many celebrated artists and orchestras. For the Festival she treats us to music by that great master of musical invention Haydn – a composer close to her heart. His Cello Concerto in D, she reveals, ‘speaks, sings and dances and is so beautiful in its lyricism’.
The evening opens and closes with some thrilling Rossini and life-affirming Beethoven. Sitting between the revolutionary ‘Eroica’ and defiant Fifth, the Fourth Symphony is more subtly Beethoven at his best. Its inital mystery gives way to exhilaration, while constant offbeats throughout propel us to a furious final drama, a Haydenesque tease, and triumph.

The Abbey Choir’s annual concert this year is structured around the setting of the Mass by Matthew O’Donovan – a composer living and working in Eton. Recorded by the Abbey Choir in 2023, the Missa Brevis contains both contemporary harmonic language and musical idioms associated with French music of the first half of the 20th century. Between movements there is music by Judith Bingham, who received an OBE in 2020, Matthew Martin – a composer living and working in Cambridge, and Herbert Howells. Choral music by Parry, Elgar and Harris is well represented by repertory that appears on many an album of choral music favourites, while Naylor’s Vox dicentis: Clama is an extended work in four distinct sections, with choral textures frequently dividing into lush eight-part writing that works spectacularly well in the wonderful acoustic of the Abbey.

Event Details
This exhibition is being held in Sherborne Abbey in conjunction with SherborneTown Council.
Gaia is a touring artwork by UK artist, Luke Jerram.
Measuring 7 metres in diameter and created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface* the artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet, floating in three dimensions. The installation aims to create a sense of the Overview Effect, which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment. When presented indoors, the Earth artwork slowly revolves. A specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning Composer Dan Jones is played alongside the sculpture. In Greek Mythology, Gaia is the personification of the Earth.
