Consider the Heavens

Faith and Science are often thought as mutually exclusive. Moreover, science is commonly seen as gradually whittling away the space left in our world for God. The discovery of the so-called ‘God particle’ at CERN in 2012 and the sheer immensity of the universe we see in the night sky can all conspire to question the place, even the need for God in our society.

We welcome this evening the renowned astro-physicist Prof Dame Jocelyn Bell-Burnell FRS. Dame Jocelyn is a practising Quaker and was awarded the special Physics prize in 2018 for her discovery of Pulsars. She donated the prize to support girls and young women seeking careers in Physics.

We very much look forward to hearing her insights and how considering the heavens has changed her understanding of God

Robots of Good Character

Professor Nigel Crook is head of Robotics and Machine Learning at Oxford Brookes University. In this talk he will explore whether we can build robots that have good moral character – and whether or not we should. He will broadly outline some existing approaches to building ‘autonomous moral machines’ and offer his own thoughts on what should be the key components to such machines.

The idea of robots being able to make decisions based on a form of moral code has been around longer than robots themselves. Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics, which include an over-riding command to avoid harming humans, first appeared in his 1942 short-story Runaround. But reality is finally catching up with science-fiction and the creation of robots with moral competency is now a tantalising possibility.

Nigel will discuss how it may become a necessity as robots become increasingly autonomous, intelligent and complex.

Digby Memorial Church Hall, Digby Road, Sherborne DT9 3NL at 7.30 pm.  Tickets £5 on the door or online from http://insight.sherborneabbey.com/event/robots-of-good-character/
