Frequently
Asked Questions
I would like to get married
in Sherborne Abbey. What do I need to do?
The Vicar sees every couple at the start of the process of being married in
one of his churches (including Castleton and Lillington) and you should contact
him for an appointment by telephoning the Vicarage on 01935 812452 or writing
to him at The Vicarage, Abbey Close Sherborne DT9 3LQ.
How do I arrange for my child to be baptised in the Abbey (or one of
the other churches)?
If you live in the parish of Sherborne you may obtain a leaflet describing baptism
from the Parish Office in Abbey Close together with a copy of the words used
during the baptism service and an application form. Forms should be completed
and returned to the Parish Office. One of the clergy will then arrange to come
and visit you.
Please note that if you do not live in the parish you must write to the Vicar
at The Vicarage, Abbey Close, Sherborne, DT9 3LQ in the first instance.
I would like to go on a tour of the Abbey. Who do I contact?
Regular guided tours, open to everyone, are held on Tuesday mornings at 10.30am
and Friday afternoons at 2.30pm during the months of April through to September.
Sometimes these tours may be cancelled, if for example, the Abbey is required
for a funeral or memorial service. So it is as well to check with the Parish
Office 01935 812452 (office hours only 9.00am to 12.30pm : 2.00pm to
4.30pm Monday to Friday) particularly if you are travelling any distance.
If you wish to visit the Abbey without going on a guided tour you are most welcome
at any time. The Abbey is open between the hours of 8.00am and 4.00pm in the
winter and 8.00am and 6.00pm during British Summer Time.
I would like to arrange for my club/organisation to be taken around
the Abbey. Who do I contact to arrange this?
The Assistant Parish Secretary will be pleased to talk to you to arrange
such a visit for which a charge of £3.00 per head is made. He can
be contacted in writing at The Parish Office, 3 Abbey Close, Sherborne,
DT9 3LQ, by telephone on 01935 812452 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
or Friday mornings only between 9.00am and 12.30pm or by emailing
the address shown on the Contact Us page.
