The Priest Theologian’s Research Reports

The Reverend Dr. Alistair Stewart has been Priest Theologian of Sherborne Abbey since Easter 2010. At 2.30 pm on six successive Tuesdays (commencing 10 January) Dr. Stewart will discuss the fruits of his recent research  into the life of the Early Church. All sessions will be held in the Vicarage dining room, and each will be complete in itself: come to as many as you can. 10 January: Preparing for baptism in the first century, and the fourth. 17 January: Why two professions of faith in our baptism service today? 24 January: On the way to death with Ignatius of Antioch. 31 January: One church, one faith… one bishop? 7 February: The white stuff: milk and the transmission of virtue. 14 February: Picking up some fragments: prayers on papyrus.

The Glories of Venice

Be transported to the splendour of 16th century Venice for this concert of music by Monteverdi and Gabrieli. The programme contains a wide variety of textures of voices and instruments, with solo and multi-voice works for choir and instruments and instrumental music from one of the country’s top period ensembles.

Learning for Discipleship Taster"

St Paul’s Church, 9.30 am to 12.30 pm: ‘Mission Impossible?’ This is an introduction to Mission in God’s World, a core module in the Diocesan Learning for Discipleship programme, planned to run weekly from April to July 2012.

 

This ‘taster morning’ is a stand-alone session which may be attended free of charge by anyone interested, not just those thinking of doing the summer course. Refreshments provided. Exploring the ‘times’ and ‘seasons’ of human existence, A Time to Dance has been commissioned by the Summer Music Society of Dorset to celebrate its 50th anniversary. It has been designed as a companion piece to Bach’s Magnificat, using the same orchestral forces and composed to be played on period or modern instruments.

The Life of Christ - open aire play

The Life of Christ – an open air play in 3 acts: Wintershall near Guildford travelling by coach.  A very moving experience. . The day is quite a long one; the performance starts at 10.00 am and finishes at 4.00 pm, and you do need to be able to be mobile as the performance moves through the grounds from the stable scene, to the feeding of the 5000, to the last days of Jesus’ life and beyond. Tickets cost £15.00 for adults, £7.50 for children and the cost of the coach is £11.00. Application forms are at the back of the Abbey and in the Parish Office. Please return the completed form with your money (cheques payable to Sherborne Abbey) to the Parish Office no later than Monday 13 February.
